Blue Sharks In both the Atlantic and the Pacific Blue are among the most
numerous of all sharks found in open waters. They rarely are seen near
shore and mainly stay out in the open oceans.
Since the blue shark are the most
common many of these fish sharks have been tagged and are known to travel
far distances in short times, one was tagged in Brazilian waters and travel
1700 miles in 64 days before being captured. Another tagged in New York
waters was later recaptured of Brazil which is 3700 miles away.
Most adult blue sharks attain a length of about 6-8ft some growing to lengths
over 12ft. A protential new world record was caught off Montauk New York this past season by one of the local charter
boats, it weight in at 526lbs and
was about 12ft. in length.
Blue sharks mature at a relatively early age, with males becoming sexually
active at 4-5 years and females at about 5-6 years.
The blue shark life expectancy is
estimated to about 20 years, they are not long-lived as other sharks.
Mating
season for Blue sharks is late spring to early winter. The male uses his claspers to insert a packet of sperm into the
females’s body. She inturns holds this and next spring her ovaries produce eggs, and then fertilizes these eggs. She will
carry the liter for 9-12 months and then give live birth to as many as 100 pups that are about 15 inches in length.
When blue sharks mate they go though a ritual where the male bites the female
on the back in the way that many other shark species do.
Its interesting to note however that the females skin is about
twice as thick as that of the male, so that his teeth inflict nothing more than surface scratches.
Although they seem to enjoy milling about, going nowhere blue sharks can put
on speeds to catch mackeral, anchovies, sardines and squid. Blue sharks can
swin at speeds greater than 40 mph.
