Montauk shark method of fishing is principly drifting with a chum slick and placing your
baits at various locations in the slick because of their teeth a wire leader is
needed. Generally, these leaders are brown piano wire from 125lb to 300lb test.
Water conditions and temerature of the water are factors that will determine the amount of chum need. Normally
1-2 cans of frozen bunker chum is enough. It is put into a bag or plastic container
with large wholes and hung over the side of the boat.
A lot of boats use too much chum,
remember the purpose of chum is to attract not too feed the sharks. Most of the
montauk charter boat's fish with frozen baits in the slick.
If there are fresh baits such as blues,
mackerel, whitting, or ling available take advantage of it.
Tackle can vary from ultra light conventional outfits to more expensive
Penn International reels 30-130 lb class reels and matching rods.
The selection of equipment doesn't make the fishing any easier, it only benefits
in the fighting of the fish.
Remember most of the sharks that are caught
in Montauk waters are Blue sharks which are normally released after fighting
them. Therefore, it is recommended not to go too heavy unless the intend is to
capture and keep the shark.
